Football’s a tough game, and when a load of blokes who don’t play very often turn up to take on a team of well-drilled coaches on a muddy field in February, it usually doesn’t go well.
But this time, it’s the cricketers who are smiling after recording a rare win over their counterparts from Twyford Comets.
Previous fixtures have not gone the cricketers’ way.
This is largely because the footballers, are, well, generally better at football.
But the 2025 match bodes well for the coming summer of cricket as the team produced a stunning performance.
In unusually good February weather, the team produced a superb 2-0 victory.
Marshalled by Lee Leggett, combining superb tactical knowledge and drill sergeant like authority, the cricketers pulled out all the stops to seal the victory.
Stars on the day were Benji Stickley, who scored both goals, and keeper Andrew Jones.
Jones produced one of the moments of the 2024 cricket season with a stunning one-handed catch.
And he proved again he’s a man for a big moment, by saving a potentially game-changing penalty.
Other notable performances came from Lee himself, and his central defence partner Mark Higgins.
Given the two have a combined age of around 100, they produced a remarkably solid performance (apart from when Mark gave away the penalty).
Comets had their moments, including a shot that crashed against the post, but the cricketers’ held on for a famous victory
The cricketers’ energy (from a very handy group of iron-lunged teenagers) was probably the difference.
Now, we look forward to the return fixture in the summer where the footballers will no doubt show up with some “friends” who just happened to have played semi-pro cricket in Australia.
