Cricketers should be able to beat footballers at cricket, and footballers should be able to beat cricketers at football.
Earlier this year, we saw an anomaly where the cricketers had enough football experience (plus younger legs) to record a historic 2-0 win.
It was the first time in many years the cricketers had won the annual encounter between Twyford & Ruscombe CC and Twyford Comets FC.
The return fixture was held at Stanlake Meadow on a boiling Wednesday evening in July.
The TRCC XI featured the debuts of a number of the coaches of the flourishing junior section, and some seasoned veterans.
The Comets’ XI featured some very good cricketers who were able to marshal the side into a highly efficient unit.
The match was held in the 20/20 format, with the Comets batting first and recording a total of around 180 (The scores were scribbled on a bit of paper that’s gone missing).
This was a formidable total, which can be put down to the cricketers perhaps taking it a bit easy, The Comets having some formidable players and everyone having to bowl.
TRCC’s innings saw some excellent batting from the junior coaches, but the side found themselves pinned down by the Comets’ well-drilled fielding unit.
The game went right to the wire, with TRCC falling agonizingly short by just one run.
The matches were held as part of an ongoing relationship between the two clubs, who share a number of players and coaches in the junior and adult sections.
The clubs are working together on the ongoing project which should eventually see a new pavilion built at Stanlake Meadow in the next few years.
The project is slowly moving forward and designs have been produced for the new facility.
It is hoped a final plan will be submitted to Wokingham Borough Council towards the end of this year and approved by the authority at some point in 2026.
Following that, building work “could” (important to note that particular word) start towards the end of 2026, with completion in 2027/28.
Working on the project from the TRCC end are Chairman Simon Burr and Player Liaison Ian Evans, who are dutifully sitting through the meetings discussing the project.
Comets chairman Brian Rogers is leading the football club's efforts, and was delighted at both the result in the cricket and the fact it was such a fun and close game.
He said: “It was such a great game, and to go down to a single run was amazing. We lost at football and won at cricket, who’d have thought that?
“It’s very important that we work together as two clubs to try to get this pavilion built as soon as possible. It’s a massive part of in both clubs making big steps forward in the future.”
TRCC were captained by club stalwart Hugh Fort, who said: “The result doesn’t really matter, plus we lost the scorecard so it doesn’t really count.
“In all seriousness, the relationship between the two clubs is very important as we both continue to grow.
“TRCC now has more than 150 juniors registered, compared to zero 10 years ago.
“We also have two league sides, as well as the thriving Sunday XI.
“The future is looking good for us, and if we’re able to get the new pavilion built in the next few years, that will be a tremendous step in the right direction as we continue to grow.”
